Product Overview
Tencel Denim Fabric from India with a Soft Drape and Natural Sheen
Cotton-TENCEL lyocell and 100% TENCEL denim, rigid or stretch
Tencel denim is denim woven with TENCEL lyocell, a cellulose fibre made from wood pulp in a closed-loop process that recovers most of its solvent. Blended with cotton or used alone, lyocell gives denim a softer hand, a fluid drape, a subtle sheen and better moisture handling than cotton alone. Newton Exports supplies Tencel lyocell denim from Indian mills in 6 to 11 oz, rigid or stretch, for dresses, wide-leg jeans and sustainable collections, with mill test reports for every lot.

FAQs
Tencel Denim Fabric FAQs
What is Tencel denim? +
Tencel denim is denim woven with TENCEL lyocell fibre, either blended with cotton or on its own. Lyocell is a cellulose fibre made from wood pulp, dissolved in a solvent that is recovered and reused in a closed-loop process, then spun into fibre. In denim, lyocell gives a softer hand, a fluid drape, a gentle sheen and good moisture handling, so the fabric feels cooler and smoother than all-cotton denim. It is widely used in women's denim, dresses, wide-leg jeans and sustainable collections.
Is Tencel denim sustainable? +
Tencel denim is generally considered a lower-impact choice than conventional cotton denim. Lyocell is made from wood from managed forests, and its closed-loop process recovers most of the solvent used. The fibre also needs no irrigation, unlike cotton. The overall impact still depends on the blend, the dyeing and finishing, and the mill's water and chemical management, so buyers should ask for the fibre certificate, OEKO-TEX Standard 100 and ZDHC compliance. Combining lyocell with organic or recycled cotton lowers the impact further.
What is the difference between Tencel denim and cotton denim? +
Cotton denim is firmer and more structured, holds creases, and fades with high contrast. Tencel denim, or cotton-Tencel blends, is softer, smoother and drapes more, with a subtle sheen and a cooler feel. Lyocell absorbs moisture efficiently, which makes the fabric comfortable in warm weather. It also takes dye evenly, so shades look rich. On the other hand, lyocell needs careful finishing to control pilling and fibrillation, and it fades more softly than ring-spun cotton denim.
Is Tencel denim good for jeans? +
Yes, especially for relaxed, wide-leg and women's fits where comfort and drape matter. Cotton-Tencel blends with 20 to 50% lyocell keep the classic denim look while feeling softer, and stretch versions with 1 to 2% elastane suit fitted jeans. For structured, rugged jeans and high-contrast fades, all-cotton denim is still the better choice. Many brands use Tencel denim for women's and premium soft collections and cotton denim for classic men's lines, giving buyers both options in one range.
Does Tencel denim pill or shrink? +
Lyocell can fibrillate, which means fine fibres lift from the surface and can lead to pilling or a frosted look if the fabric is not finished correctly. Mills control this with enzyme and softening finishes, and buyers should ask for pilling results to ISO 12945, typically grade 3 to 4. Shrinkage is controlled at the mill and is usually within 3% after washing to AATCC 135. Garments should be washed at moderate temperatures, and garment washes should be tested on the fabric before bulk production.
What is the MOQ for Tencel denim from India? +
For developed Tencel denim qualities, Indian mills typically ask for 3,000 to 5,000 metres per shade or construction. Lead times are usually 45 to 60 days, since branded lyocell fibre may need to be sourced for the order. Custom blend ratios, special finishes or new constructions will need the higher minimum. Share your blend, weight, shade and quantity, and Newton Exports will confirm availability, fibre certification and lead time with Indian mills that work with TENCEL lyocell.
How much Tencel denim fits in a container? +
A 20 ft container holds about 150 to 160 rolls of 8 to 9 oz Tencel denim, roughly 16,000 to 19,000 metres, 7 to 8 MT and 25 to 27 CBM. A 40 ft high cube holds about 360 to 380 rolls, roughly 38,000 to 45,000 metres, 17 to 18 MT and 60 to 63 CBM. Because Tencel denim is mid to light in weight, it fills containers by volume rather than weight. Lighter 6 to 7 oz qualities fit more metres. Final figures are confirmed on the packing list before dispatch.
What is the HS code for Tencel denim? +
The code depends on the fibre blend. Denim with 85% or more cotton and over 200 GSM is classified under HS 520942. Cotton-lyocell denim with less than 85% cotton, mixed mainly with lyocell, which is an artificial fibre, and weighing over 200 GSM falls under HS 521142. Fabric of 100% lyocell staple fibre is classified under heading 5516, woven fabrics of artificial staple fibres. The exact 8-digit code is confirmed on the commercial invoice and packing list based on the final fibre content and weight.
Specifications are typical and confirmed per order.
