FAQs
Lightweight Denim Fabric FAQs
What is lightweight denim fabric? +
Lightweight denim fabric is denim that weighs about 4 to 7 oz per square yard, or roughly 136 to 237 GSM, compared with 12 to 14 oz for typical jeans. It is woven from finer yarns, so it drapes, breathes and feels soft against the skin. Lightweight denim is used for shirts, dresses, skirts, kidswear and summer clothing in warm climates. The term often covers chambray as well, which is a plain-weave fabric with an indigo warp and white weft that gives a similar faded denim look.
What is the difference between chambray and denim? +
Both use an indigo-dyed warp and a white weft, but the weave is different. Chambray is a plain weave, where each weft yarn goes over one warp yarn and under the next, so it looks the same on both sides and feels smooth and light. Denim is a twill weave, with a visible diagonal line on the face and a lighter back, and it is usually heavier and firmer. Chambray is mainly used for shirts and dresses, while denim shirting gives a true denim look in a shirt weight.
What weight of denim is best for shirts? +
Most denim and chambray shirts use fabric between 4 and 6 oz per square yard, about 136 to 203 GSM. 4 to 5 oz chambray suits lightweight dress shirts, blouses and warm-weather shirts. 5 to 6 oz twill denim shirting suits western shirts and casual denim shirts with more structure. 6 to 7 oz suits overshirts and shirt jackets that are worn over a T-shirt. Heavier fabric looks more rugged, but for everyday shirts comfort and drape usually matter more than durability.
Is lightweight denim available with stretch? +
Yes. Lightweight denim shirting and chambray can be made with 1 to 2% elastane, giving about 10 to 20% stretch. Stretch shirting is used for fitted women's shirts, slim men's shirts and dresses that need to move with the body. Because the fabric is light, buyers should check seam slippage and recovery as well as stretch, so seams do not pull apart and the fabric does not bag at the elbows. Rigid 100% cotton remains the most common choice for classic chambray shirts.
What is the MOQ for chambray and lightweight denim from India? +
For developed lightweight denim and chambray qualities, Indian mills typically ask for 3,000 to 5,000 metres per shade or construction. Running qualities that a mill already produces can often be supplied in smaller lots. Dobby patterns, slub yarns, custom shades or special finishes such as peaching or mercerising usually need the higher minimum and a longer lead time. Share your weight, weave, shade and quantity, and Newton Exports will match you with suitable qualities from Indian shirting and denim mills.
What tests should I ask for on lightweight denim? +
For light shirting fabrics, ask for shrinkage to AATCC 135 or ISO 6330, rubbing fastness to ISO 105-X12 and washing fastness to ISO 105-C06. Because the fabric is light, check tear strength to ASTM D1424 and seam slippage to ASTM D434 so seams do not pull apart in wear. Pilling to ISO 12945 is useful for brushed or peached finishes. Mill test reports are shared for every lot, and third-party testing by labs such as SGS, Intertek or TUV can be arranged before shipment.
How many metres of lightweight denim fit in a container? +
Lightweight denim fills a container by volume before it reaches the weight limit. A 20 ft container holds about 150 to 160 rolls of 5 to 6 oz fabric, roughly 22,000 to 24,000 metres, 6 to 7 MT and 25 to 27 CBM. A 40 ft high cube holds about 360 to 380 rolls, roughly 54,000 to 57,000 metres, 15 to 16 MT and 60 to 63 CBM. Longer rolls or lighter weights can fit more metres. Final figures are confirmed on the packing list before dispatch.
What is the HS code for chambray and lightweight denim? +
Classification depends on weight and weave. Cotton chambray of 85% or more cotton weighing up to 200 GSM, which covers most 4 to 5.5 oz chambray, is classified under HS 520842, plain weave of yarns of different colours. Lightweight denim twill under 200 GSM falls under heading 5208, and fabric over 200 GSM, about 6 oz and above, moves to heading 5209, such as 520942 for denim or 520941 for heavier plain weave. The exact 8-digit code is confirmed on the commercial invoice for each shipment.
Specifications are typical and confirmed per order.
