Product Overview
Black Denim Fabric and Coloured Denim from India
Sulphur black, jet black, grey and fashion shades, rigid or stretch
Black denim fabric is denim dyed with sulphur black, or black over indigo, instead of the classic indigo blue. Coloured denim extends the same idea to grey, olive, brown, red, mustard and other fashion shades, using sulphur, reactive or pigment dyes, or overdyeing. Newton Exports supplies black and coloured denim from Indian mills in 8 to 13 oz, rigid or stretch, including non-fade black qualities that hold their colour through washing, with mill test reports for every lot.

Black Denim Types
Sulphur Black vs Non-Fade Jet Black Denim
How the black is dyed decides how the jeans will look after washing.
01
Sulphur black
The classic black denim. Fades to charcoal and grey with washing and wear, giving a vintage black look. Used for washed and distressed black jeans.
02
Non-fade jet black
Dyed with improved sulphur or reactive dyes so the black stays deep through many washes. Used for clean, always-black jeans.
03
Indigo-sulphur black
Black over an indigo base, or indigo over black, giving a blue-black cast that fades with character.
04
Coloured denim
Grey, olive, brown, red, mustard and pastel shades dyed in the warp, or overdyed after weaving.

Fastness grades
Set minimum rubbing and washing fastness grades in the order.
05
MOQ and lead time
Developed qualities typically start at 3,000 to 5,000 m per shade, with 30 to 45 days lead time.

FAQs
Black Denim Fabric FAQs
What is black denim fabric? +
Black denim fabric is denim dyed black instead of indigo blue. Most black denim uses sulphur black dye on the warp yarns, sometimes over or under an indigo base, while the weft is left white, grey or black. Like blue denim it is woven in a twill, so the face is darker than the back. Black denim is used for black jeans, jackets, skirts and uniforms. Depending on the dye, it either fades to charcoal and grey with washing or stays deep black for a clean, smart look.
What is the difference between sulphur black and non-fade black denim? +
Sulphur black is the traditional black denim dye. It is cost-effective and fades gradually to charcoal and grey with washing and wear, which suits washed, vintage and distressed black jeans. Non-fade or jet black denim uses improved sulphur dyes, reactive dyes or special fixing so the colour stays deep through many home washes. It is chosen for smart black jeans and uniforms where fading is a fault. Ask for washing fastness to ISO 105-C06 or AATCC 61 to compare non-fade qualities.
Why does black denim fade? +
Black denim fades because the dye sits mainly on the surface of the warp yarn, as indigo does, and sulphur dyes are less resistant to washing, rubbing and sunlight than some other dye classes. Each wash removes a little dye, and abrasion wears the surface to reveal the lighter core of the yarn. Detergents with bleach or optical brighteners and hot washes speed this up. Non-fade black qualities fix the dye more deeply, while washing inside out in cold water helps any black denim keep its colour longer.
What colours of denim are available besides blue and black? +
Indian mills produce denim in grey and charcoal, olive and khaki, brown and tobacco, red and burgundy, mustard and yellow, and pastel shades such as pink and sky blue, as well as white and ecru. Colours are achieved by dyeing the warp with sulphur, reactive or pigment dyes, by bottoming or topping indigo with another colour, or by overdyeing fabric after weaving. Some colours can be developed for a minimum quantity per shade, so seasonal collections often combine a core black with a few fashion colours.
Does black denim come with stretch? +
Yes. Black denim is widely available in comfort and power stretch with 1 to 4% elastane, which is popular for women's skinny jeans and men's slim black jeans. Stretch black denim is usually 8 to 11 oz. Cotton-polyester-elastane qualities can offer better colour retention and recovery. When ordering stretch black denim, check stretch and growth to ASTM D3107 along with washing fastness, because some finishing processes used for non-fade dyes can affect the stretch properties of the fabric.
What is the MOQ for black and coloured denim from India? +
For developed black denim qualities, Indian mills typically ask for 3,000 to 5,000 metres per shade or construction, and running black qualities can often be supplied in smaller lots. Fashion colours dyed in the warp usually need a similar minimum per shade, while overdyeing can allow smaller lots of each colour from a common base fabric. Lead times are usually 30 to 45 days, or longer for new shades that need lab dips. Share your shade references and quantities for a quick check.
How much black denim fits in a container? +
A 20 ft container holds about 150 to 160 rolls of 10 to 11 oz black denim, roughly 16,000 to 19,000 metres, 9 to 9.5 MT and 25 to 27 CBM. A 40 ft high cube holds about 360 to 380 rolls, roughly 38,000 to 45,000 metres, 21 to 23 MT and 60 to 63 CBM. Lighter stretch qualities fit more metres, while heavier 12 to 13 oz qualities fit fewer. Mixed shades can be loaded in one container. Final figures are confirmed on the packing list before dispatch.
What is the HS code for black denim fabric? +
Black denim made of 85% or more cotton and weighing more than 200 GSM is classified under HS 520942, woven fabrics of cotton, denim, because denim is defined by its coloured warp and lighter weft rather than by the colour blue. Denim with less than 85% cotton mixed mainly with polyester or other man-made fibres falls under HS 521142. Piece-dyed coloured twills that are not true denim may be classified under other subheadings. The exact 8-digit code is confirmed on the commercial invoice for each shipment.
Specifications are typical and confirmed per order.
