A Phad painting is a long cloth scroll painted with scenes from the lives of folk deities such as Pabuji and Devnarayan. Traditionally, priest-singers unrolled the scroll and sang the story at night.
Phad is an age-old craft of the Joshi artisanal communities of Bhilwara and Shahpura. The art is ethnic and narrative, with contemporary style smaller panels for homes. Bright reds, yellows and greens are the vivid colours of India, and every Indian handicraft Phad is painted by hand.

Questions
Is a Phad painting a long scroll?
Traditional Phads are long; smaller panels are available.
Can you commission themes?
Yes.
Do you frame?
Yes.
What is the lead time?
Several weeks to months.
What is the minimum order?
From one painting.
How is a Phad painting read?
The scroll is unrolled and the priest-singer lights each scene with a lamp as he sings, moving through the story panel by panel. Figures are drawn larger or smaller depending on their importance, and the hero sits at the centre. Smaller panels for homes usually show one key scene from the epic.
Are the colours natural?
Traditional Phads use mineral and vegetable colours mixed with gum, which give the bright yet earthy tones.
