Product Overview
Selvedge Denim Fabric from India for Premium Jeanswear
Shuttle loom woven, 30 to 32 inch, with red or white line selvedge ID
Selvedge denim fabric is denim woven on narrow shuttle looms, where one continuous weft yarn passes back and forth to form a clean, self-finished edge that does not fray. The edge, often marked with a red or white line, is used on the outseam of premium jeans and shows when the hem is cuffed. Newton Exports supplies selvedge denim from Indian mills with shuttle loom capacity, in 11 to 16 oz, rigid or with slight stretch, with mill test reports for every lot.

Selvedge vs Wide Denim
Selvedge Denim vs Wide-Loom Denim
Selvedge and regular denim can use the same yarn and dye. The loom makes the difference.
01
Shuttle loom selvedge
Woven slowly on narrow shuttle looms. The continuous weft makes a closed edge, a denser hand and slight irregularity that gives character and better fades.
02
Projectile and rapier wide denim
Woven fast on modern 58 to 64 inch looms. The weft is cut at each edge, so the edges are overlocked in sewing. Lower cost and higher yield per metre.
03
Selvedge ID line
Coloured yarns in the edge, most often red, white, green or yellow, that identify the fabric and show on the cuffed hem.

6 Things to Check Before Ordering Selvedge Denim
01
Selvedge ID colour
Specify the ID colour, or ask for a custom ID for your brand.
02
Fabric consumption
Plan on about 2 m per jean because of the narrow width, and grade markers to the selvedge.
03
Sanforized or loomstate
Decide on pre-shrunk or loomstate fabric before cutting.
04
Shade and cast
Approve lab dips or a reference for the indigo shade and cast.
05
MOQ and lead time
Shuttle loom capacity is limited, so plan for higher minimums per shade and 45 to 60 days lead time.
06
Edge quality
Agree how edge tension, curl and ID consistency will be checked at inspection.

FAQs
Selvedge Denim Fabric FAQs
What is selvedge denim fabric? +
Selvedge denim fabric is denim woven on a narrow shuttle loom, where a single continuous weft yarn passes back and forth across the warp and turns at each edge. This creates a clean, tightly woven self-edge, or selvedge, that will not fray or unravel. Selvedge denim is usually 30 to 32 inches wide, rope-dyed with indigo and woven slowly, which gives a denser hand and more character. On jeans the selvedge runs along the outseam, and its coloured ID line shows when the hem is turned up.
What is the difference between selvedge and non-selvedge denim? +
The difference is the loom. Selvedge denim is woven on narrow shuttle looms with a continuous weft, so the edges are closed and finished. Non-selvedge denim is woven on wide projectile or rapier looms at high speed, the weft is cut at each edge, and the edges must be overlocked when sewn. Selvedge denim is narrower, so a pair of jeans uses about 2 metres instead of about 1.3 metres, and it costs more. In return it offers a premium finished outseam, more texture and the heritage appeal that premium brands sell on.
What does red line selvedge mean? +
Red line selvedge, or redline, is selvedge denim with red yarns woven into the edge, so a thin red line runs along the selvedge. The style comes from classic American jeans and is the best-known selvedge ID. Mills also weave white, green, yellow, blue or multi-colour lines, and brands can order a custom ID colour so their fabric is recognisable. The ID line has no effect on how the fabric wears; it identifies the mill or brand and shows on the outseam when the jeans are cuffed.
Why is selvedge denim more expensive? +
Selvedge denim costs more for three reasons. Shuttle looms weave far slower than modern looms, so each metre takes more loom time. The fabric is only about 30 to 32 inches wide, so a pair of jeans needs about 50 to 70% more fabric than wide denim. Shuttle looms are also scarce and need skilled operators, which limits capacity. Selvedge is often combined with ring-spun, slub and rope-dyed yarns, which add cost but give the texture and fades that premium buyers pay for.
What weight of selvedge denim is best for jeans? +
Most selvedge jeans use 13 to 14 oz fabric (441 to 475 GSM), which is sturdy enough to fade well but comfortable to wear year round. 11 to 12 oz suits lighter jeans, shirts and warm markets. 15 to 16 oz suits buyers who want heavy, rugged jeans and jackets with high-contrast fades, though they take longer to break in. Choose the weight together with the finish, because unsanforized heavy selvedge will also shrink and stiffen more on the first wash.
What is the MOQ for selvedge denim from India? +
Shuttle loom capacity in India is limited, so minimums per shade or construction are usually higher relative to output than for wide denim. Developed selvedge qualities typically start from about 3,000 metres per shade, and new constructions, custom selvedge IDs or special slub yarns may need more. Lead times are usually 45 to 60 days because shuttle looms run slower. Share your weight, cast, ID colour and quantity, and Newton Exports will confirm the minimum and lead time with the mill before quoting.
How many metres of selvedge denim fit in a container? +
Because selvedge is narrow, a container holds more metres for the same weight. A 20 ft container takes roughly 30,000 to 35,000 metres of 13 to 14 oz selvedge, about 10 to 12 MT and 24 to 26 CBM. A 40 ft high cube container takes about 70,000 to 80,000 metres, about 23 to 25 MT and 55 to 60 CBM. Remember that each jean uses about 2 metres, so plan quantities in garments as well as metres. Final figures depend on roll length and are confirmed on the packing list.
What is the HS code for selvedge denim fabric? +
Selvedge denim made of 85% or more cotton and weighing more than 200 GSM is classified under HS 520942, woven fabrics of cotton, denim. All selvedge in the 11 to 16 oz range is well above 200 GSM, so this heading covers almost every selvedge order, including qualities with 1 to 2% elastane. The selvedge edge itself does not change the classification. The exact 8-digit code for each shipment is confirmed on the commercial invoice and packing list based on the final composition and weight.
Specifications are typical and confirmed per order.
