Products
Dohars from India are lightweight blankets made of three layers: soft cotton mulmul on both faces with a thin layer in between, finished in traditional block prints. They are ideal for air-conditioned rooms and mild climates.Dohars are reversible, machine washable and pack flat, which keeps freight costs down. They are a growing category with buyers looking for an alternative to heavy duvets.
Dohars from India: the lightest Indian blanket
Dohars from India are a lovely secret of Indian homes. A dohar is made of three thin layers, soft cotton mulmul on both faces with a light layer in between, and finished in traditional block prints. It is perfect for air-conditioned bedrooms, mild climates and anyone who finds a duvet too warm.
Many of our buyers abroad had never heard of a dohar until they tried one, and then reordered. We usually suggest introducing them as a light summer blanket or a layering piece over sheets.
What makes a dohar special
Three layers of mulmul
Mulmul is a very fine, soft cotton that gets softer with every wash. The three layers trap a little warmth without weight.
Hand block prints
Dohars are printed in Jaipur with florals, buttis and paisleys, often in different prints on each side, so they are reversible.
Light and washable
A dohar weighs well under a kilo, folds small and goes straight into the washing machine.
Sizes
We supply single (about 150 x 225 cm) and double (about 225 x 250 cm) dohars, with custom sizes on request.
Why buyers like dohars
They pack flat, which keeps freight costs down. They suit warm markets all year and cooler markets in summer. And they sell well alongside bedsheets and pillow covers in matching prints.
Colours
Soft pastels, indigo and classic Jaipur florals are easy. Custom colourways for larger orders are possible with a little extra time.
Dohar or quilt?
A dohar is thin and light for mild weather. A Jaipuri razai is filled with cotton for cooler nights. Many buyers stock both.
Minimum quantities and packing
Minimums are per design and size and are kept modest. Dohars are folded and packed in cloth or paper bags with your label. We can quote ex-factory, FOB, CFR or CIF, whichever suits you.
Questions about dohars from India
Are dohars machine washable?
Yes, on a gentle cycle. They become softer with each wash.
Are dohars warm enough for winter?
They are best for mild weather or as a layer under a duvet in winter.
Can I order dohars with my own print?
Yes. Printers can carve your design for larger orders.
How to introduce dohars to new customers
Because many shoppers outside India have never seen a dohar, it helps to explain it simply on the label: a light, three-layer cotton blanket for warm nights. Displaying a dohar folded on a made bed, next to bedsheets in matching prints, helps customers understand it immediately.
What affects the price
Size, the fineness of the mulmul and the number of print colours matter most. Single-colour prints are the most economical.
Tell us about your customers and their climate, and we will suggest prints and sizes to start with.
