Fibre cement board · Overview
Fibre Cement Board for Cladding, Ceilings, Partitions and Floors
Fibre cement board is a flat building board made from Portland cement, cellulose fibre, silica and fly ash, pressed and cured into a dense sheet that will not burn, rot or attract termites. Newton Exports supplies asbestos-free fibre cement board (fiber cement board in US spelling) from 4 to 18 mm thick, made to IS 14862 and BS EN 12467.
Builders use it wherever a board must stay stable in heat, rain and humidity: external cladding, soffits, wet-area ceilings, dry-wall partitions and mezzanine floors. It is classed A1 non-combustible under EN 13501-1, scores 0 for flame spread under ASTM E84, and gives off no detectable VOC or formaldehyde.

Why specify it
8 Reasons to Choose Fibre Cement Board
What the test reports show, in plain terms.
01
It will not burn
Non-combustible to BS 476 Part 4 and Class A1 to EN 13501-1, with a flame spread index of 0 and a smoke developed index of 30 under ASTM E84.
02
It is asbestos-free
Absence of asbestos is confirmed by EPA 600/R-93/116 and X-ray diffraction testing, so the board suits schools, hospitals and homes.
03
It handles water and weather
Passes the BS EN 12467 warm water, soak-dry, heat-rain, freeze-thaw and water impermeability tests, with water absorption of 38% or less.
04
No termites, borers or mould
Tested to IS 4833, IS 4873 and ASTM G21: no termite attack, no borer attack and no fungal growth.
05
It is strong and holds screws
Bending strength of 14 MPa along the board and 8 MPa across it, impact strength of at least 2100 J/m² and face screw withdrawal of at least 1800 N.
06
It stays dimensionally stable
Shrinkage from dry to saturated is 0.19% or less, so joints stay tight on large ceilings and façades.
07
It makes rooms quieter
A single board gives 32 dB (6 mm) to 34 dB (18 mm) of sound insulation, and partition systems reach STC 48 to 52.
08
It keeps indoor air clean
No VOC or formaldehyde was detected under ISO 16000 tests, and the board is chemically stable and inert.

Applications
6 Ways to Use Fibre Cement Board
One board covers the outside of a building, the ceilings and the walls inside it.

1. External wall cladding
Fixed to a steel or aluminium sub-frame as a ventilated rain-screen, in full panels or planks, then painted or textured.

2. Soffits and canopies
Under-roof soffits, eaves, canopies and walkways, where the board faces heat and rain and must not spread fire.

3. False ceilings
Flush or tiled ceilings in kitchens, bathrooms, car parks and corridors, where ordinary gypsum sags in humidity.

4. Dry-wall partitions
Screwed to both sides of a light-gauge steel stud frame for fast, fire-rated and acoustic internal walls.

5. Mezzanine and raised floors
16 and 18 mm boards laid over steel joists for mezzanines, loft floors and site office floors.

6. Prefab and modular buildings
Site cabins, labour camps, modular classrooms and clinics built on light steel frames.

8 Tips for Storing, Cutting and Fixing Fibre Cement Board
Based on our safety data sheet and common site practice.
01
Store it flat and dry
Keep pallets on a flat surface in a dry, covered, frost-free and ventilated area, and keep boards covered in transit.
02
Let boards settle on site
Allow boards to adjust to site humidity before fixing, so joints stay tight after installation.
03
Cut with slow-running tools
Score and snap, or use slow saws and shears that make coarse chips rather than fine dust.
04
Wear basic protection
Use safety goggles, gloves and a P2 dust mask when cutting or drilling, and keep the work area ventilated.
05
Fix to a proper frame
Screw boards to light-gauge steel or treated timber framing at the spacing set by the system design.
06
Leave room for movement
Leave small gaps at board joints and fill them with a flexible joint compound or cover them with a trim.
07
Finish to suit the space
Once joints are treated, paint, texture, tile or clad over the board.
08
Dispose of offcuts normally
Offcuts are inert and are treated as ordinary construction waste under local rules.

How Much Fibre Cement Board Fits in a Container
The board is dense, so a 20 ft container reaches its weight limit long before it is full. That makes the 20 ft container the normal choice.

Fibre Cement Board FAQs
What is fibre cement board made of? +
Portland cement, crystalline silica, fly ash and cellulose pulp, pressed and cured into a dense board. It contains no asbestos.
Is fibre cement board the same as cement board? +
Cement board is the general name. Fibre cement board (fiber cement board in US spelling) is the type reinforced with cellulose fibre, which gives it bending strength and lets it be cut and screwed like a dry-wall board.
Is fibre cement board fireproof? +
It is non-combustible: Class A1 to EN 13501-1 and non-combustible to BS 476 Part 4. In a rated partition system it can give up to 132 minutes of fire resistance, depending on the system design.
Can fibre cement board be used outdoors? +
Yes. It passes the BS EN 12467 heat-rain, soak-dry, freeze-thaw and warm water tests, and is used for external cladding and soffits on a ventilated frame.
What thickness of fibre cement board do I need? +
Typically 4 to 6 mm for ceilings, 6 to 12 mm for partitions, 8 to 12 mm for cladding and 16 to 18 mm for floors. Send us the application and frame spacing and we will suggest a thickness.
What is the HS code for fibre cement board? +
Asbestos-free fibre cement sheets and panels are usually classified under HS 6811.82. Confirm the code for your country with your customs broker.
How many fibre cement boards fit in a 20 ft container? +
About 1,160 sheets of 6 mm or 580 sheets of 12 mm (1220 × 2440 mm), which is roughly 25 MT and 21 CBM. A 40 ft container usually carries little extra, because the weight limit is reached first.
Which standards does your fibre cement board meet? +
IS 14862:2000 and BS EN 12467 for the board, with fire tests to BS 476, ASTM E84 and EN 13501-1. Test reports are available with your quote.
Values are typical laboratory results from our technical data sheet NE-FCB-TDS Rev 1.0 and may vary within normal manufacturing tolerances. Loading figures are indicative and are confirmed in the packing list for each order.
