Product Overview
Heavy Denim Fabric from India for Workwear, Jackets and Rugged Jeans
13 to 16 oz rigid and low-stretch 3/1 twill in bulk rolls
Heavy denim fabric is denim weighing 13 oz per square yard or more, woven tight in 3/1 twill so it resists abrasion, tearing and wear. It is the fabric behind work jeans, carpenter trousers, chore and trucker jackets and long-lasting heritage jeans. Newton Exports supplies heavyweight denim from Indian mills in 13 to 16 oz, in rigid cotton or low-stretch constructions, indigo or indigo-sulphur, with mill test reports for weight, strength and shrinkage on every lot.

Heavy Denim Types
Rigid vs Low-Stretch Heavy Denim
Both are built for durability. Low stretch adds movement for workwear that is worn all day.
01
Rigid heavy denim
100% cotton with no elastane. Highest strength and abrasion resistance, holds a structured shape and fades with high contrast. Used for work jeans, jackets and heritage jeans.
02
Low-stretch heavy denim
About 1% elastane for 8 to 15% stretch. Easier to kneel, climb and bend in, with most of the strength of rigid denim. Used for modern workwear and trade trousers.
03
Workwear finishes
Heavy denim can be given anti-pilling, water-repellent, stain-release or flame-retardant finishes for specific trades.

Denim Terms
8 Terms Buyers Use When Buying Heavy Denim
01
oz per square yard
The weight unit for denim; 14 oz means 14 ounces per square yard.
02
Heavyweight
Usually 13 oz and above; over 16 oz is often called super heavyweight.
03
Martindale
An abrasion test that counts rubbing cycles before the fabric wears through.
04
Tear strength
The force needed to continue a tear, critical for workwear.
05
Sanforized
Pre-shrunk at the mill to control shrinkage in washing.
06
Coarse count
Thicker yarn, such as 6s to 8s, used for heavy weights.
07
Industrial laundering
High-temperature commercial washing used for workwear rental.
08
Low stretch
About 1% elastane for movement without losing structure.

6 Things to Check Before Ordering Heavy Denim
01
End use
Tell the mill whether the fabric is for fashion jeans or industrial workwear, as test targets differ.
02
Strength targets
Set minimum tensile and tear strength values in the order.
03
Laundering
Share whether garments will be home washed or industrially laundered.
04
Finishes
Agree any water-repellent, stain-release or flame-retardant finish before bulk.
05
MOQ and lead time
Developed qualities typically start at 3,000 to 5,000 m per shade, with 30 to 45 days lead time.
06
Container weight
Plan quantities by weight, since heavy denim fills a container by MT before CBM.

FAQs
Heavy Denim Fabric FAQs
What is heavy denim fabric? +
Heavy denim fabric is denim that weighs 13 oz per square yard or more, about 441 GSM and above. It is woven tightly in 3/1 twill from coarse cotton yarns, which makes it stiff when new, very strong and resistant to abrasion and tearing. Heavy denim is used for workwear, carpenter jeans, overalls, chore and trucker jackets, aprons and heritage jeans that are expected to last for years. Fabric over about 16 oz is often called super heavyweight and is used mainly for specialist jeans and jackets.
What is the difference between 14 oz and 16 oz denim? +
14 oz denim (about 475 GSM) is the most common heavy weight. It is strong enough for work jeans and jackets yet still comfortable to wear for long days and in mild climates. 16 oz denim (about 542 GSM) is around 15% heavier, stiffer and warmer. It takes longer to break in, resists wear even better and produces sharper, high-contrast fades, so it suits heavy workwear, aprons and rugged heritage jeans. For most workwear programmes, 14 oz offers the best balance of durability, comfort and cost.
Is heavy denim good for workwear? +
Yes. Heavy denim is one of the most widely used workwear fabrics because it combines high tear and tensile strength with abrasion resistance, breathability and easy care. Rigid 14 to 16 oz denim suits jackets, aprons and overalls, while low-stretch heavy denim with about 1% elastane makes work trousers easier to kneel and climb in. For industrial laundering, specify shrinkage and colour fastness after high-temperature washing. Special finishes such as water repellency, stain release or flame retardancy can be added for specific trades.
Is heavyweight denim available with stretch? +
Yes. Heavy denim is available in low-stretch constructions with about 1% elastane, giving roughly 8 to 15% stretch while keeping most of the strength and structure of rigid denim. This is popular for modern workwear and trade trousers, where wearers need to bend, kneel and climb. Higher stretch levels are not usually used at 13 to 16 oz, because the fabric becomes harder to recover and can bag. For fitted fashion jeans with more stretch, a lighter stretch denim in 9 to 12 oz is a better choice.
What is the MOQ for heavy denim from India? +
For developed heavyweight denim qualities, Indian mills typically ask for 3,000 to 5,000 metres per shade or construction. Running qualities can sometimes be supplied in smaller lots. New constructions, special finishes such as water repellency, or custom shades will need the higher minimum and a longer lead time, usually 45 to 60 days. Because heavy denim fills a container by weight, buyers often plan orders in full containers of about 15,000 metres for a 20 ft or 33,000 metres for a 40 ft high cube.
What tests should I ask for on heavy denim? +
For workwear, the most important tests are grab tensile strength to ASTM D5034, tear strength to ASTM D1424 and abrasion resistance to ASTM D4966 Martindale. Add shrinkage to AATCC 135 or ISO 6330, and ask for it after industrial laundering if garments will be rented or commercially washed. Check rubbing fastness to ISO 105-X12 so indigo does not mark skin or seats. Mill test reports are shared for every lot, and third-party testing by labs such as SGS, Intertek or TUV can be arranged before shipment.
How much heavy denim fits in a container? +
Heavy denim reaches the container weight limit before it fills the space. A 20 ft container holds about 150 to 160 rolls of 14 to 15 oz denim, roughly 15,000 to 16,000 metres, 11 to 12 MT and 25 to 27 CBM. A 40 ft high cube holds about 330 to 340 rolls, roughly 33,000 to 34,000 metres, 24 to 25 MT and 55 to 58 CBM, so some space stays empty. Heavier 16 oz qualities fit fewer metres. Final figures are confirmed on the packing list before dispatch.
What is the HS code for heavy denim fabric? +
Heavy denim made of 85% or more cotton and weighing more than 200 GSM is classified under HS 520942, woven fabrics of cotton, denim. All heavyweight denim from 13 to 16 oz is far above 200 GSM, so this heading covers rigid cotton qualities and low-stretch qualities with about 1% elastane. Denim with less than 85% cotton, for example with added polyester for workwear, is classified by its blend under other headings. The exact 8-digit code is confirmed on the commercial invoice and packing list for each shipment.
Specifications are typical and confirmed per order.
