India’s Zone IV and Zone V seismic areas call for a rebar with ductility characteristics beyond what standard Fe500D grades typically deliver, and SAIL developed Fe500S specifically to meet that requirement. The ‘S’ designation stands for Seismic, and this grade is manufactured at SAIL’s integrated plants alongside the rest of the TMT range but held to a distinctly different mechanical profile focused on energy absorption rather than raw strength.

Fe500S is built with a 1.25 minimum UTS/YS ratio, roughly double the margin required of standard EQR grades, alongside 18% minimum elongation and 8% minimum uniform elongation, values that let the bar absorb far more energy before failure than conventional grades under the repeated, reversed loading a structure experiences during an earthquake. Yield strength is bounded on both ends, a 500 MPa minimum and 650 MPa maximum, a deliberate design choice that keeps the strength-to-ductility balance predictable across every batch rather than allowing yield strength to drift upward at the expense of ductility. Very high ductility, high elongation, and high uniform elongation together are precisely the properties required for construction in high earthquake-prone areas.
