Product Overview
Stretch Denim Fabric from India for Jeans, Jeggings and Fitted Denim
Comfort, power and 4-way stretch in bulk rolls from Indian denim mills
Stretch denim fabric is denim woven with an elastane (spandex or Lycra) core in the weft, and in bi-stretch qualities in the warp too, so the fabric stretches and then recovers its shape. Newton Exports supplies stretch denim from India's main denim clusters in Gujarat, Maharashtra, Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu, in weights from 7 to 12 oz and cuttable widths of 58 to 60 inches. Every lot ships with mill test reports for weight, stretch, growth, shrinkage and colour fastness.

Comfort, Power and 4-Way Stretch Denim Compared
The stretch level decides the fit. Pick it from the garment, not from the fabric name alone.
01
Comfort stretch
15 to 25% weft stretch from about 1 to 2% elastane. Feels close to rigid denim with easier movement. Used for slim, straight and regular fit jeans.
02
Power stretch
30 to 45% weft stretch with high recovery, often from a core-spun or dual-core elastane yarn. Holds and shapes the body. Used for skinny jeans and women's denim.
03
4-way stretch (bi-stretch)
Elastane in both warp and weft, giving stretch in length and width. Used for jeggings, super skinny fits and active denim.

Denim Terms
8 Terms Buyers Use When Buying Stretch Denim
01
Core-spun yarn
Elastane filament wrapped in cotton, so the stretch fibre is hidden inside the yarn.
02
Dual-core
Elastane plus a polyester core for higher recovery and lower growth.
03
Growth
The stretch a fabric does not recover. Lower is better; buyers usually ask for 5% or less.
04
Recovery
How much of the stretch returns after the fabric is released.
05
Bi-stretch
Another name for 4-way stretch, with elastane in warp and weft.
06
RHT and LHT
Right-hand and left-hand twill, the direction of the diagonal line.
07
Cuttable width
Usable width between the edges, usually 58 to 60 inch for stretch denim.
08
Shade band
A set of swatches showing the shade range of a lot, used to match panels in cutting.

Shrinkage after wash
Share your wash recipe so the mill can set shrinkage for the washed garment.
03
Shade continuity
Ask for shade bands per lot and cut panels from one shade group.
04
MOQ per quality
Developed qualities typically start at 3,000 to 5,000 m per shade. Ready qualities can be lower.
05
Lead time
About 30 to 45 days for developed qualities, longer for new constructions.
06
Packing and labelling
Confirm roll length, core, roll labels with lot and shade, and the packing list format.

FAQs
Stretch Denim Fabric FAQs
What is stretch denim fabric? +
Stretch denim fabric is cotton denim that contains 1 to 6% elastane, also sold as spandex or Lycra, so it stretches with the body and then returns to its shape. The elastane is usually spun inside a cotton sheath (core-spun yarn) and woven in the weft. Comfort stretch gives about 15 to 25% stretch, power stretch 30 to 45%, and 4-way or bi-stretch denim adds elastane in the warp as well, so it stretches in length and width. It is the standard fabric for skinny, slim and women's jeans.
What is the difference between comfort and power stretch denim? +
Comfort stretch denim has about 1 to 2% elastane and gives 15 to 25% weft stretch. It looks and feels close to rigid denim but is easier to move in, which suits straight, slim and regular fit jeans. Power stretch denim has 2 to 4% elastane, often in a core-spun or dual-core yarn, and gives 30 to 45% stretch with high recovery. It holds and shapes the body, so it is used for skinny jeans, high-rise women's fits and jeggings. Power stretch should be specified with a maximum growth figure, usually 5% or less.
What weight of stretch denim is best for jeans? +
Most skinny and slim jeans use 9 to 11 oz stretch denim (305 to 373 GSM), which balances stretch, opacity and durability. Lighter 7 to 8 oz qualities suit jeggings, leggings-style fits and women's summer denim, where a soft drape matters more than structure. Heavier 12 oz comfort stretch suits men's straight jeans, jackets and stretch workwear that need a more rigid look with some give. Choose the weight together with the stretch type, because a heavy power stretch can feel tight and a light comfort stretch can bag at the knee.
What is 4-way stretch denim? +
4-way stretch denim, also called bi-stretch, has elastane yarn in both the warp and the weft. Normal stretch denim only stretches across the width, but 4-way denim also stretches along the length, typically 10 to 20% in the warp and 35 to 60% in the weft. This gives a leggings-like fit and freedom of movement, so it is used for jeggings, super skinny jeans, maternity denim and active or athleisure denim. Because both directions stretch, cutting and sewing need care, and buyers should check growth and recovery in both directions.
What is the MOQ for stretch denim from India? +
For developed stretch denim qualities, Indian mills typically ask for 3,000 to 5,000 metres per shade or construction, because each run needs its own warp, dyeing and finishing set-up. Ready or running qualities that a mill already produces can often be supplied in smaller lots, sometimes from about 1,000 metres. A new construction, special shade or custom finish will usually need the higher minimum and a longer lead time. Share your target weight, stretch, shade and monthly volume, and Newton Exports will match you with qualities that fit your quantity.
What tests should I ask for when buying stretch denim? +
Ask for stretch, growth and recovery to ASTM D3107, which tell you how the jeans will fit and whether they will bag. Ask for shrinkage after washing to AATCC 135 or ISO 6330, rubbing fastness to ISO 105-X12, which matters for indigo crocking, and washing fastness to ISO 105-C06. For strength, check grab tensile to ASTM D5034 and tear strength to ASTM D1424. Mill test reports are shared for every lot, and independent third-party testing by labs such as SGS, Intertek or TUV can be arranged before shipment.
How many metres of stretch denim fit in a 40 ft container? +
A 40 ft high cube container holds roughly 360 to 380 rolls of stretch denim, about 38,000 to 45,000 metres, for 9 to 11 oz qualities. That is roughly 20 to 23 MT and 60 to 63 CBM. A 20 ft container takes about 150 to 160 rolls, 16,000 to 19,000 metres, 8 to 10 MT and 25 to 27 CBM. Actual figures depend on fabric weight, roll length and core size, and are confirmed on the packing list before dispatch. Lighter fabrics fit more metres per container, while heavier fabrics reach the weight limit sooner.
What is the HS code for stretch denim fabric? +
Stretch denim containing 85% or more cotton by weight and weighing more than 200 GSM is classified under HS 520942, denim of cotton. Most 98/2 and 92/6/2 stretch denims fall here, since they are well over 200 GSM. Denim with less than 85% cotton mixed mainly with man-made fibres is classified under HS 521142, and other blends are classified by their main fibre. The exact 8-digit code for each shipment is confirmed on the commercial invoice and packing list according to the fabric's final composition and weight.
Specifications are typical and confirmed per order.
