The Banarasi brocade table runner is cut from fabric woven in Varanasi, where brocade weavers use extra weft threads of gold or silver zari to lift motifs such as buta, jaal and floral vines off the silk ground. The weave is done on jacquard handlooms or powerlooms, and the patterns stand out from the base with a slight relief.
We line the brocade with cotton to give the runner weight and to protect the zari floats, and finish each end with a pointed edge and a tassel. Classic colours are maroon, emerald, royal blue and black with gold zari. A pure silk version is available for premium buyers, while a silk-blend version keeps the look at a more retail-friendly price.
