Bone Inlay Tray

A bone inlay tray is made by covering a wooden carcass with tiny hand-cut slivers of bone, then filling the gaps with coloured resin and polishing the whole surface smooth. The bone comes as a by-product of the meat industry and is cleaned and bleached before an inlay artisan cuts it with a fret saw and fits it piece by piece.

Udaipur and Jodhpur artisanal communities have refined this age-old craft from Mughal-era mother of pearl work. Our designs move between ethnic florals and graphic chevrons, craft in contemporary style that suits modern interiors. Background colours from inky navy to soft sage echo the colours of India, and as a handicraft each tray shows slight variation in the pieces, the mark of Indian handwork.

Selling Bone Inlay Trays

Interior stores and online decor shops sell them as ottoman and coffee table trays, often alongside bone inlay mirrors and boxes. They photograph strongly, which helps marketplace sales, and they suit boutique hotel lobbies.
