A papier mache tray from Kashmir is formed from soaked paper pulp pressed over a mould, dried, smoothed and then painted with fine squirrel-hair brushes. Gold and silver leaf highlights are added, and several coats of varnish give the tray its glossy, wipe-clean finish.
Kashmiri papier mache is an Indian age-old craft that arrived with Persian artisans in the 15th century, and today artisanal communities in old Srinagar still pass it from parent to child. We offer traditional ethnic chinar and bird motifs, and simpler contemporary style borders on white, black or pastel grounds. The palette ranges from deep reds to soft blues, the colours of India in miniature, and each handicraft piece is signed by its painter on request.
