Areca Leaf Plates

Areca leaf plates are pressed from the leaf sheaths that areca palms shed naturally. The sheaths are collected, washed, softened and heat-pressed in moulds, so each plate is strong, oil resistant and compostable within weeks, with no glue, wax or chemical binder.

Leaf-plate making is an age-old craft of South India, where artisanal communities and village self-help groups have long used leaves for feasts. Today the same idea meets a contemporary style of eco catering, replacing plastic and foam. The natural tan colour and grain vary plate to plate, an earthy Indian take on the colours of India, and every handicraft batch supports rural ethnic livelihoods.
