Chindi Rag Bath Mat

A chindi rag bath mat is woven from strips of leftover cotton fabric, called chindi, collected from garment factories. Weavers cut the scraps into strips and weave them on handlooms into thick, absorbent mats.

Rag weaving is an age-old craft of the artisanal communities of Panipat, a city known for recycling textiles. Each mat mixes Indian fabric offcuts, including traditional block prints and solids, so the colours of India appear in lively, unique combinations. The ethnic, upcycled look suits a contemporary style bathroom, and every handicraft mat is different.

Questions

Is each chindi rag bath mat different?

Yes, because the fabric strips vary.

Can you sort colours?

Yes, into blues, pinks, greys or naturals.

Can it be used in a kitchen?

Yes, it works well in kitchens and entrances too.

Is a chindi rag bath mat durable?

Yes, the dense weave of fabric strips makes it strong and absorbent, and it can be machine washed cold. Colours may soften a little with washing, which suits its relaxed, recycled look.
