A Longpi black pottery bowl is made without a wheel. Tangkhul Naga potters grind black serpentinite rock and weathered clay into a paste, shape it by hand around moulds, fire it in an open bonfire and polish it with a local leaf that gives the deep black, slightly matte surface.
Longpi pottery is an age-old craft kept alive by small artisanal communities in Ukhrul, Manipur, and it has a Geographical Indication tag. The rugged black Indian form with natural cane handles is craft in contemporary style and photographs beautifully against wood and linen. It is a quieter side of the colours of India, deeply ethnic in origin, and each handicraft bowl is unique because it is shaped by hand.
