Ajrakh napkins are printed in Ajrakhpur, Kutch, on soft cotton cambric that becomes more absorbent and supple with use. The printers adapt the Ajrakh repertoire to a small square, usually a central star or lattice field framed by a narrow printed border, so each napkin looks complete when folded or laid flat.
Colour comes from natural indigo, madder root and iron, applied in successive resist, mordant and dye stages with washing in between. Napkins are hemmed with a mitred corner for a clean finish. Mixing two or three Ajrakh designs within one set is a popular way to give a table a collected, artisan look.
