Dabu Print Bedcover

A Dabu print bedcover is made by printing a paste of mud, lime and gum onto cotton with carved blocks, then dyeing the cloth in indigo. The mud resists the dye, and when it is washed off the pattern appears in pale lines against deep blue, often with a fine crackle where the mud cracked.

Dabu is an age-old craft of the chhipa artisanal communities of Akola and Bagru, a rarer cousin of traditional block prints. We use natural indigo, pomegranate and madder on Indian fabric, so the colours of India here are deep blues, rust and earthy greens. Patterns stay ethnic in origin but are laid out in a contemporary style with plenty of space, and every handicraft bedcover is unique.
