A Dhokra metal figurine is cast by the lost-wax method: a clay core is covered in wax threads that form the design, encased in clay, then heated so the wax melts out and molten brass takes its place. Each mould is broken to release the piece, so no two are the same.
Dhokra is an age-old craft of the tribal artisanal communities of Bastar, West Bengal and Odisha, dating back more than 4,000 years. The figures are ethnic tribal forms, horses, elephants, owls and musicians, with contemporary style minimal pieces available. The warm bronze tones carry the earthy colours of India, and every Indian handicraft Dhokra piece is truly one of a kind.
