Marble Inlay Box

A marble inlay box is carved from white marble and decorated with semi-precious stones set flush into the lid in floral patterns. It holds jewellery and keepsakes and makes an heirloom gift.

Pietra dura is an age-old craft of the artisanal communities of Agra, linked to the Taj Mahal. Designs are ethnic Mughal florals and contemporary style geometrics, with stones bringing the jewel colours of India. Every Indian handicraft box is cut, inlaid and polished by hand in small Agra workshops.

What is the history of pietra dura in Agra?

Pietra dura, called parchinkari in India, flourished under the Mughals in the 17th century, most famously in the Taj Mahal. Descendants of the original craftsmen still work in Agra, cutting tiny pieces of lapis, malachite and carnelian by hand. Each box carries that heritage, which is why it is a favourite with museum shops and buyers of meaningful gifts.
