A Panja dhurrie takes its name from the panja, a heavy iron comb shaped like a claw that the weaver uses to beat each row of weft down hard. The result is a dense, durable flat weave with crisp edges to the pattern.
Panja weaving is an age-old craft of the artisanal communities of Warangal in Telangana and parts of Rajasthan, with a Geographical Indication for Warangal dhurries. Designs are ethnic geometric and tribal motifs in the deep colours of India, as well as contemporary style abstracts and stripes. Each Indian handicraft dhurrie takes days to weave.
