A Kashmiri silk carpet is knotted in pure silk on silk or cotton foundations, often at 300 to 900 knots per square inch. The silk catches light so the carpet seems to change colour as you walk around it.
Silk carpet knotting is an age-old craft of the artisanal communities of Srinagar, who learnt it from Persian masters. The designs are ethnic Persian and Mughal florals, in the jewel colours of India, and contemporary style pieces are possible. Each Indian handicraft silk carpet can take a year or more to knot.
