Kashmiri Walnut Wood Box

A Kashmiri walnut wood box is carved from the dense, dark wood of the walnut trees of the Kashmir valley. Carvers cut deep chinar leaves, vines and lattice patterns into the lid and sides, then polish the wood to bring out its rich grain.

Walnut wood carving is an age-old craft of the artisanal communities of Srinagar, with a Geographical Indication. Designs are ethnic chinar and floral carvings, and contemporary style plain boxes with a single motif. The deep browns sit beside the brighter colours of India, and each Indian handicraft box is carved by hand.
