Each Zardozi cushion cover carries the royal metal embroidery of India, practised for centuries in Lucknow, Agra and Bareilly. On a Zardozi cushion cover, artisans couch metallic threads, coiled springs of zari called dabka and naqshi, sequins and small beads onto the fabric, often over a padded base so the motifs stand out in relief.
Typical designs are floral medallions, paisleys, borders and mughal-inspired motifs, worked in antique gold, copper or silver on deep-coloured velvet or raw silk. Zardozi is slow, skilled work, so this is a premium cushion and a showpiece rather than an everyday cover.
