The Kalamkari cushion cover is block printed in Pedana, near Machilipatnam on the Andhra coast, using carved wooden blocks and dyes from myrobalan, alum, iron, madder and indigo. Cloth is treated with buffalo milk and myrobalan to take the mordant, printed in layers and washed in running water, which gives Kalamkari its soft, mellow colours.
Motifs reflect Persian influence from centuries of trade: trees of life, flowering vines, paisleys, peacocks and medallions. Typical palettes are rust, black, mustard and indigo on off-white or on a dyed ground. We cut covers so the main motif is centred on the front panel and close them with a zip.
