A Kutch mirror work cushion cover is embroidered by women artisans in the villages of Kutch, Gujarat, where communities such as the Rabari, Ahir and Sodha each have their own stitch vocabulary. Small round mirrors, called abhla, are held in place by a ring of buttonhole stitch, then surrounded by chain, herringbone and interlaced stitches in bright cotton or silk floss.
Designs range from dense, all-over mirror fields to central medallions and borders on a solid cotton ground. The mirrors catch light as people move around the room, which is exactly why these cushions stand out in a shop display. Each cover is lined behind the embroidery and finished with a zip.
