Each batik cushion cover is made with a wax-resist dyeing technique: hot wax is applied to cotton with a brush, tjanting pen or metal block, and the cloth is dyed so the waxed areas stay pale. The wax is cracked deliberately between dye baths, letting colour seep into thin lines that give batik its spider-web crackle, and it is finally boiled off.
In India, batik is practised in Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Rajasthan and Santiniketan. Our batik cushion covers come in abstract leaves, circles and geometric repeats in one to three colours. The crackle varies on every piece, which makes each cover slightly unique.
