A Phulkari cushion cover carries flower work, the meaning of the word Phulkari, from Punjab, where it was traditionally embroidered on shawls called odhnis for weddings. Artisans work from the reverse of the cloth with long and short darning stitches in untwisted silk floss, counting threads to build geometric flowers, lozenges and stars that shine because the floss lies flat and parallel.
On a Phulkari cushion cover the embroidery usually covers much of the front, in vivid pink, orange, gold and magenta on a dark red, maroon or black cotton ground. Patiala is the main export centre today. Each cover is lined to protect the floss and closed with a concealed zip.
