Kalamkari Placemat and Napkin Set

This Kalamkari placemat set is printed in Pedana near Machilipatnam, Andhra Pradesh, home of the block printed style of Kalamkari. Printers use carved wooden blocks and natural dyes from myrobalan, alum, iron and plant roots to build layered floral, paisley and tree-of-life motifs in rust, black, mustard and indigo on an off-white ground.

Each set combines quilted or double-layer cotton placemats of 33 x 48 cm with napkins of 45 x 45 cm in a coordinating print, so retailers get a ready-to-gift product. Kalamkari tends to read warm and traditional, and it pairs especially well with brass, copper and terracotta tableware.

How Retailers Use Placemat Sets

Sets are an easy gifting product for festive seasons, weddings and housewarmings, and they work for Indian and Mediterranean restaurants that want a handmade table. Online, a set photographs well as a complete table story. I often advise buyers to add the matching runner so the customer can step up in basket size.
