Sabai Grass Placemats

Sabai grass placemats are handwoven in the Mayurbhanj district of Odisha from Sabai, a wild grass that grows on dry hillsides. The grass is twisted into rope, coiled and stitched, or woven flat, by tribal women artisans who have built a livelihood around the craft.

The mats are light, flexible and naturally golden, with a smooth surface that suits plates and bowls. We offer plain natural mats, mats with dyed accent rows in black, indigo or red, and coiled round mats with a spiral pattern. Matching coasters and bread baskets can be added.

Who Buys Sabai Grass Mats

Eco and zero-waste stores, beach and island resorts, garden centres and fair-trade retailers favour Sabai grass because it is natural, light and handmade by women artisans. It also suits Asian and tropical restaurants. Natural with a black accent row works in almost every interior. Sabai grass craft is supported by state programmes in Odisha, and buying from registered artisan groups gives retailers a traceable social impact story for their customers.
