Water Hyacinth Placemats

Water hyacinth placemats are handwoven in Assam and the North East from the dried stems of water hyacinth, a fast-growing plant that chokes rivers and ponds. Harvesting it helps clear waterways, and drying and weaving the stems turns a nuisance into a durable natural fibre, which gives the product a powerful eco story.

The stems are twisted into thick cords and woven or braided into round and oval mats with a chunky, soft surface. Colours range from natural sandy brown to a lighter bleached tone. The texture pairs beautifully with ceramics, rattan and linen, and the mats are thicker than most grass alternatives.

Specifications

Typical Buyers

Coastal and boho homeware brands, eco stores, garden and outdoor retailers and island resorts buy water hyacinth mats. The waterway-clearing story resonates with sustainability-focused shoppers. The round natural mat is the bestseller, often bought with matching baskets. Water hyacinth is a fast renewing resource, so supply is steady across the year, unlike some seasonal grasses that are only harvested in particular months. Larger chargers and table centre mats can be woven from the same stems.

Export Supply and Freight

Mats are graded for shape, thickness and weave tightness, then dried thoroughly and packed with silica gel in cartons to prevent mould in transit. Shipments of the water hyacinth placemats go from Kolkata or Guwahati ICD on ex-factory, FOB, CFR or CIF terms.
