The Chikankari table runner is hand embroidered in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, where Chikankari has been practised since the Mughal era. Artisans trace a floral design onto the cloth with washable ink, then work it in fine white thread using a vocabulary of more than 30 stitches, including bakhiya shadow work, phanda knots and murri.
The result is a quiet, tone-on-tone runner that lets tableware and flowers take centre stage. We make it on soft cotton cambric or on a cotton-linen blend for more body, with scalloped or hemstitched edges. Ivory, white and pale pastel grounds are the standard palette.
