Shibori Table Runner

A Shibori table runner is made by folding a length of cotton or cotton-linen into a narrow stack, clamping it between shaped wooden blocks or wrapping it around a pole, and dipping it into indigo. The protected areas stay pale, producing repeating squares, rectangles or diagonal stripes along the runner.

The narrow format of a runner shows the repeat of itajime grids especially well. We finish the edges with a neat hem or a frayed fringe. Indigo with white is the standard, and a charcoal version suits grey and black tableware. Dyeing is done in the same Jaipur and Bagru workshops as our Shibori throws and cushions.
