Bagru Block Print Table Runner

Our Bagru block print table runner is printed in the village of Bagru near Jaipur, where the Chhipa community has worked with wooden blocks and natural dyes for over three centuries. Two techniques are used: Syahi-Begar, black and red on an off-white ground, and Dabu, where a paste of clay, gum and lime is printed as a resist before indigo dyeing, leaving crackled pale motifs on a deep blue field.

Dyes come from pomegranate rind, alum, iron, indigo and turmeric, and the fabric is washed in local water and sun-dried between stages. Edges are finished with a narrow hem or a short tassel at each end. The slightly uneven block marks and Dabu crackle make every metre a little different.
