PP Weed Mat Buyer’s Guide 2026: GSM, Specs, Prices & Export from India

A PP weed mat is a woven polypropylene ground cover that blocks sunlight so weeds cannot grow, while water, air and fertiliser still reach the roots. It is one of the simplest products we export, and also one of the most misunderstood. Earlier this month an Italian horticultural cooperative sent us an enquiry for 120 and 150 GSM weed control ground cover, 4.2 to 5.25 metres wide, with a 15 x 15 cm grid. Their follow-up questions were sharp: what colour are the grid lines, are the rolls on cardboard or PVC cores, are they rolled flat or folded? Those questions are exactly what separates a good weed mat order from a container of regret.

So I have put everything we have learned into one guide. It covers how to pick the right GSM and width, what the test numbers on a data sheet really mean, what weed mat costs, how many rolls fit in a container, and what to check when importing from India. If you buy weed control mats for a farm, a nursery, a distribution business or a landscaping company, this should save you a few emails.

What Is a PP Weed Mat?

A PP weed mat (also sold as weed control ground cover, weed control mat, landscape fabric or weed barrier) is made by slitting polypropylene film into flat tapes and weaving them on wide looms into a tight fabric. UV stabiliser is added to the polymer so the fabric survives years of sun. The weave is dense enough to stop light, which is what weeds need to germinate, yet open enough to let rain and drip irrigation drain straight through.

There are three families of weed suppression material, and buyers often mix them up:

TypeHow it is madeBest forWeak point
Woven PP weed matSlit PP tapes woven into fabric, 70 to 150 GSMFarms, orchards, nurseries, greenhouses, multi-season useCut edges can fray if not hot-cut
Non-woven PP weed matSpunbond PP filaments bonded by heat, 50 to 150 GSMDecorative beds under bark or gravel, separation layersAges faster if left uncovered in strong sun
Plastic mulch filmSolid PE film, 20 to 50 micronsOne-season vegetable bedsNot permeable; water runs off; usually single-use

For professional growers, woven PP is the workhorse. It is permeable, strong, reusable for several seasons and the cheapest per square metre per year of service. That is why most of this guide focuses on it.

Choosing the Right GSM

GSM (grams per square metre) is the fabric’s weight, and it drives almost everything: strength, puncture resistance, lifespan and price. Heavier is not always better. I regularly talk buyers down from 150 GSM when the fabric will only ever see footsteps, because they would be paying 25% more in fabric and freight for strength they will never use.

Here is the full range. Each card opens the product page with its specifications.

Width, Roll Length, Grid Lines and Colour

Width is where a lot of money is quietly lost. Standard widths run from 1.0 m to 5.25 m, and the common ones are 1.2, 1.8, 3.66, 4.2 and 5.25 m. Order the width that covers your bed or row in one piece. Every join is an overlap of 10 to 15 cm of fabric you pay for and lay twice, plus a gap where weeds love to sneak through.

Rolls are 100 m long as standard. Rolls of 4.2 m and wider are normally folded in half before winding, so they are easier to handle and fit more per container. Full-width flat rolls on PVC cores are possible, and some greenhouse buyers prefer them because they unroll in one pass. The trade-off is that a 5.25 m flat roll weighs about 70 kg and needs two or three people, or a forklift with a carpet pole, to move.

Marker lines are woven in as coloured tapes, either a 15 x 15 cm grid or a single line every 30 cm. They let planting crews space holes without measuring. Green is standard; white and yellow are available, and white lines on black fabric are easier to see in low light. Fabric colour is usually black. White or white-on-black reflects light back into the crop and keeps the root zone cooler, which matters in greenhouses and hot climates.

The Specifications That Actually Matter

A proper weed mat data sheet quotes ASTM test methods. These are typical results for our woven grades:

Property (ASTM method)80 GSM90 GSM100 GSM110 GSM
Grab tensile, machine direction (D4632)0.58 kN0.67 kN0.69 kN0.73 kN
Grab tensile, cross direction (D4632)0.24 kN0.38 kN0.38 kN0.49 kN
Wide width strength, machine direction (D4595)17 kN/m18 kN/m20 kN/m22 kN/m
Trapezoidal tear, machine direction (D4533)0.24 kN0.31 kN0.31 kN0.31 kN
CBR puncture (D6241)1.33 kN2.00 kN2.18 kN2.45 kN
Water flow (D4491)9 L/m²/s9 L/m²/s9 L/m²/s9 L/m²/s
UV resistance, strength retained (D4355)70%80%80%80%

How to read it: grab tensile tells you how the fabric handles being pulled tight and pinned. CBR puncture tells you how it copes with stones, pot bases and boots. Water flow confirms it will not waterlog your beds. UV resistance is the one I would never compromise on, because a mat without enough UV stabiliser looks identical on delivery and falls apart in its second summer. Always ask your supplier for the batch test report, not a generic brochure sheet.

How Long Does a Weed Mat Last?

A UV-stabilised woven PP weed mat typically lasts 3 to 5 years left uncovered outdoors, and longer when covered with bark, gravel or stone. Three things shorten its life: too little UV stabiliser, very strong sun (Mediterranean, Middle East, Australia), and physical damage from machinery. Heavier grades and a higher UV dose push the life towards the upper end. Plan for about 4% shrinkage in direct sun in the first months and leave overlap at joins accordingly.

How to Install a Weed Control Mat

Installation is simple, but shortcuts show up fast. Clear existing weeds and level the soil first, because a weed mat stops new weeds rather than killing established ones. Lay the fabric taut and pin it with steel U-staples or plastic ground pins every 1 to 1.5 m along edges and joins, closer in windy sites. Overlap joins by 10 to 15 cm. Cut planting holes with a cross cut or a hot cutter that seals the edge, and use the marker lines to keep spacing even. In landscaping, a layer of bark or gravel on top doubles the fabric’s life and looks better.

Where Weed Mats Are Used

Nurseries and greenhouses use weed mat as a clean, dry floor under pots and benches, which also cuts fungus and pests. Fruit and vegetable growers lay it in rows with drip irrigation underneath, so water goes to the plants and not the weeds, and fruit stays off the soil. Orchards and vineyards use wide rolls between tree rows. Landscapers put it under paths, gravel and decorative beds. Solar farms use heavy grades to stop weeds from shading panels, and container nurseries use 150 GSM where trolleys and heavy pots move all day.

What Does Weed Mat Cost?

In bulk, woven PP weed mat is priced by weight and quoted per square metre or per roll. As a market guide in 2026, black woven weed mat trades at roughly USD 1.5 to 3.5 per kg FOB. For a 100 GSM fabric that is about USD 0.25 to 0.4 per m². Chinese offers sit at the bottom of that range and Indian mills somewhat higher due to quality differences. The price moves with polypropylene resin, so quotes are usually valid for around two weeks.

What pushes the price up: higher GSM, extra UV stabiliser, widths of 4.2 m and more, woven grid lines, white fabric, PVC cores, flat full-width rolls and printed retail packs. What pushes it down: full container loads of a few standard specs. My honest advice is to compare quotes per square metre at the same GSM and UV grade, not per roll. A cheap roll that is 10% lighter than declared, or shorter than 100 m, is not cheap.

How Many Rolls Fit in a Container?

Weed mat fills a container by volume long before it reaches the weight limit, so roll diameter is what really decides the count. These figures are for 120 GSM, 100 m rolls on PVC cores in a 40 ft high cube container:

Loading plan for 280 rolls of 5.25 m and 150 rolls of 1.10 m, 120 GSM, in one 40 ft high cube.

Mixing widths is the trick. The short rolls fill the space at the door end that long rolls leave empty, so you ship more fabric for the same freight. These counts assume rolls about 21.5 cm in diameter, stacked by hand in staggered layers. We confirm the final count with a measured roll before booking.

Importing Weed Mat from India

HS code. Woven weed mat is classified under HS 5407.20 almost everywhere. India exports it under 5407 20 90. The USA uses 5407.20.0000. The EU and UK split it by width: 5407 20 11 for rolls under 3 m and 5407 20 19 for 3 m and wider. Non-woven weed mat goes under 5603. Declaring weed mat under plastics codes, which we see in some shipment records, invites reclassification and penalties.

Duties. This is where India has a real edge in some markets. In the USA the base duty on 5407.20 is free, but Chinese fabric pays far higher additional tariffs than Indian fabric. Under the India-UK trade agreement in force since July 2026, Indian textiles enter the UK duty-free. The EU currently charges the same 8% on Indian and Chinese weed mat, and the EU-India trade agreement concluded in January 2026 should remove it once it takes effect. Tariffs change often, so check the current rate with your customs broker.

Documents and quality checks. Every shipment should come with a commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin and the batch technical data sheet. Pre-shipment inspection by SGS, Bureau Veritas or Intertek can be arranged. We quote ex-factory, FOB Nhava Sheva, CFR or CIF to your port, and trial orders with mixed grades in one container are welcome.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best GSM for a weed control mat?

For most farms, orchards and nurseries, 100 to 120 GSM is the best balance of strength, lifespan and cost. Use 70 to 90 GSM for gardens and beds covered with mulch, and 150 GSM only where vehicles, trolleys or heavy pots move over the fabric.

What is the difference between woven and non-woven weed mat?

Woven weed mat is made from flat PP tapes woven together. It is stronger, lasts longer uncovered and suits agriculture. Non-woven weed mat is made from bonded fibres. It cuts cleanly without fraying and suits decorative landscaping under bark or gravel, but ages faster in open sun.

How long does a PP weed mat last?

A UV-stabilised woven PP weed mat typically lasts 3 to 5 years exposed outdoors, and longer when covered with mulch or gravel. Lifespan depends on GSM, UV stabiliser content, sun intensity and physical wear.

Does water pass through a weed mat?

Yes. A woven weed mat is permeable. Our grades test at about 9 litres per square metre per second (ASTM D4491), so rain and drip irrigation drain through without waterlogging the soil.

Can weeds grow through a weed control mat?

Weeds cannot germinate under the mat because it blocks sunlight. A few aggressive perennials may push through damaged or overlapped areas, and seeds can sprout in soil or debris that collects on top. Clearing weeds before laying and keeping the surface clean prevents most problems.

Is black or white weed mat better?

Black is standard and blocks light completely. White or white-on-black reflects light back into the crop and keeps roots cooler, which helps in greenhouses and hot climates. For outdoor use with heavy weed pressure, choose white-on-black so the underside still blocks light.

Is weed mat better than plastic mulch film?

For multi-season use, yes. Weed mat lets water and air through, can be reused for several years and is easier to walk on. Plastic mulch film is cheaper for a single vegetable season but is not permeable and is usually discarded after one crop.

Is polypropylene weed mat safe for vegetables and fruit?

Polypropylene is chemically inert and does not leach into the soil under normal use. It is widely used in commercial vegetable, berry and orchard production, and it removes the need for herbicides between rows.

What do the grid lines on weed mat mean?

They are coloured tapes woven into the fabric, usually a 15 x 15 cm grid or a line every 30 cm. They act as a planting guide so crews can space holes evenly without measuring.

What width of weed mat should I buy?

Buy the width that covers each bed or row in one piece. Standard widths are 1.0 to 5.25 m (common: 1.2, 1.8, 3.66, 4.2 and 5.25 m). Fewer joins means less overlap waste and fewer gaps for weeds.

Why are wide weed mat rolls folded?

Rolls of 4.2 m and wider are folded in half lengthwise so they are easier to handle and more rolls fit in a container. Flat full-width rolls on PVC cores are available on request, but fewer fit per container and they need mechanical handling.

How much does weed mat cost per square metre?

In bulk, black woven weed mat trades at roughly USD 0.25 to 0.4 per m² FOB at 100 GSM (about USD 1.5 to 3.5 per kg). Price rises with GSM, UV grade, width, grid lines, white fabric and retail packing. Prices follow polypropylene resin costs and are usually valid for about two weeks. 2026 has seen a lot of variation in costs due to global challenges, shortage of containers and raw materials.

How much does a roll of weed mat weigh?

Fabric weight equals width x length x GSM. A 1.2 x 100 m roll of 100 GSM weighs about 12 kg of fabric. A 5.25 x 100 m roll of 120 GSM weighs about 63 kg, plus the core and wrapping.

How many weed mat rolls fit in a 40 ft container?

For 120 GSM, 100 m rolls in a 40 ft high cube: about 280 rolls of 5.25 m, 280 of 4.2 m, or 1,400 of 1.1 m. Mixing widths fits more fabric, for example 280 x 5.25 m plus 150 x 1.1 m, about 22 MT. The final count depends on the measured roll diameter.

What is the HS code for weed mat?

Woven PP weed mat is classified under HS 5407.20. India uses 5407 20 90, the USA uses 5407.20.0000, and the EU and UK use 5407 20 11 (under 3 m wide) or 5407 20 19 (3 m and wider). Non-woven weed mat is classified under 5603.

What is the import duty on weed mat from India?

In the USA the base duty on HS 5407.20 is free, with additional tariffs that are currently much lower for India than for China. In the UK, Indian textiles enter duty-free under the India-UK trade agreement in force since July 2026. In the EU the duty is 8% until the EU-India trade agreement takes effect. Confirm current rates with your customs broker.

What is the minimum order quantity for weed mat?

For export, the usual minimum is one full 20 ft or 40 ft container. Several grades and widths can be mixed in one container, and trial orders for new importers can be discussed.

Can I get weed mat with my own brand or in retail packs?

Yes. Rolls can carry your printed label, and retail packs such as 1 x 10 m or 2 x 25 m can be supplied in printed bags or cartons for garden centres and DIY chains.

What documents and tests come with an export order?

A commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin and the batch technical data sheet with ASTM test results. Pre-shipment inspection by SGS, Bureau Veritas or Intertek can be arranged on request and at costs.

How do I install a weed control mat?

Clear and level the ground, lay the mat taut, pin it with U-staples every 1 to 1.5 m along edges and joins, overlap joins by 10 to 15 cm, and cut planting holes with a cross cut or hot cutter. Cover with bark or gravel in landscaping for longer life.

Does PP weed mat shrink?

Woven PP can shrink up to about 4% in direct sunlight during the first months. Leave enough overlap at joins and edges when installing.

Which countries import the most weed mat?

The USA is the largest importer of PP strip woven fabric (HS 5407.20), followed by the EU (led by the Netherlands, Germany, Poland, Belgium, Spain and Italy), Canada, Japan and the UK. India is already the largest supplier to the USA.

Why buy weed mat from India rather than China?

Indian weed mat offers consistent quality from wide-width looms up to 5.25 m, full ASTM test data, and a duty advantage in markets such as the USA and UK. Buyers also gain a second supply source alongside China. PP Weed mats from India are always of a higher quality and the supply chain is much more trustworthy. The difference is UV stabiliser, and you cannot see it. Our woven grades retain 70 to 80% of their strength after the ASTM D4355 UV test. Ask any supplier for that number on the batch test report. If they cannot give it, that tells you something.
